Testosterone and Weight Loss
Testosterone supports muscle and metabolism — low levels are common in men with obesity, and weight loss itself raises testosterone.
Plain English
Patient-Friendly Explanation
Testosterone supports muscle mass, metabolism and energy. Low levels are common in men with obesity, and weight loss itself raises testosterone — the relationship runs both ways.
Medical
Clinical Definition
Obesity is associated with reduced testosterone in men (functional hypogonadism), driven by aromatisation to oestrogen, insulin resistance and inflammation. Weight loss of 5–10% measurably increases testosterone. Testosterone therapy is not a weight-loss treatment and is reserved for clinically confirmed hypogonadism; in women, supplementation is not indicated for weight management.
Key Insight
Why It Matters
The common question “will testosterone help me lose weight?” has the answer backwards: losing weight raises testosterone. Fixing the weight fixes the hormone in most cases.
