Excess Skin After Weight Loss
Excess skin, also called skin laxity, is loose, stretched skin that remains after substantial weight loss and does not tighten back on its own once the fat beneath it is gone.
Plain English
Patient-Friendly Explanation
After losing a large amount of weight — commonly 20 kg or more, or after bariatric surgery — the skin that was stretched over fat can remain loose, because skin stretched for years loses elasticity. The result is folds of excess skin around the abdomen, arms, thighs or breasts that can cause chafing, rashes, discomfort during exercise and frustration with how the new body looks. It is a normal consequence of major weight loss, not a failure of the weight-loss effort.
Medical
Clinical Definition
Skin laxity after massive weight loss reflects loss of dermal elastin and collagen that were damaged by chronic stretch, compounded by age, smoking, sun exposure and the rapidity of weight loss. It is not resolved by further dieting or exercise, which is why body-contouring surgery (abdominoplasty, panniculectomy, brachioplasty or thighplasty) is the only definitive treatment; conservative measures such as strength training and moisturisation improve tone marginally but cannot remove redundant skin. Timing of contouring surgery is usually deferred until weight has been stable for 6–12 months to optimise outcomes and safety.

Why It Matters
Excess skin is the visible price of a big achievement, and it can be deeply uncomfortable in ways people do not expect. If it is causing rashes, hygiene problems or distress, we can discuss whether and when body-contouring options are appropriate.
