DPP-4 Inhibitors and Weight Management

DPP-4 inhibitors are tablets for type 2 diabetes that lower blood sugar without usually causing weight gain or loss. They are generally gentle on the stomach and do not cause low sugar levels on their own. They may suit patients who need blood sugar control without extra weight changes.

DPP-4 inhibitors, such as sitagliptin, vildagliptin, and linagliptin, prolong the action of incretin hormones by inhibiting dipeptidyl peptidase-4, enhancing glucose-dependent insulin secretion. They are weight-neutral, with a mean weight change of about 0 to +1 kg, carry a low hypoglycaemia risk, and lower HbA1c by approximately 0.5-0.8%. They are less effective for weight loss than GLP-1 receptor agonists or SGLT-2 inhibitors.
