Accord Medical Clinic – Singapore
An investigational medication being studied for obesity that helps people lose fat while preserving muscle.
Bimagrumab is a new investigational medicine that aims to help people lose fat while protecting their muscle. It works by blocking a protein in the body that normally limits muscle growth. It is being studied for obesity because losing muscle during dieting can slow your metabolism and make weight regain more likely.
Bimagrumab is a fully human monoclonal antibody that binds and blocks the activin type II receptor (ActRII), inhibiting myostatin and activin signalling to promote skeletal muscle hypertrophy while reducing fat mass. Phase 2 trials in adults with obesity demonstrated significant reductions in total body fat and increases in lean body mass, with a safety profile dominated by mild, dose-related muscle events such as cramps and spasms. It remains investigational and is not yet approved for the treatment of obesity.
Preserving muscle is a cornerstone of Accord’s approach to weight loss, and emerging therapies such as bimagrumab point to a future where patients can lose fat without sacrificing strength and metabolic health.
