Which area of the body will the treatment be done?
Acupuncture is usually done on the back, shoulder, arms and legs. Depending on the diagnosis, different acupoints will be taken.
How often should the treatment be done?
The frequency of treatment depends on the requirements, conditions and results of each patient. Typically, treatments are done twice a week for the first 2-4 weeks. Subsequent treatments are done once a week. The Osteoarthritis Management programme consists of 1 course of 10 sessions. Depending on the individual, 2 or more courses might be recommended.
How do you keep track of my progress?
Your pain score and power of the joint/limb will be measured throughout the programme.
Does it hurt?
Acupuncture needles are hair-thin. It is generally not painful, however, some patients may feel some soreness when needles are inserted around the associated organ with blockages or imbalance.
Do I need to do other tests or take medicines?
A blood test may be needed at the beginning of the treatment to exclude other causes of joint pain such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Pain killers and anti-inflammatory medicines may be used initially for faster relief of pain. Joint supplements such as calcium and glucosamine are recommended to maintain joint strength and shape in the long term.
What result should I expect?
Most patients will experience some pain relief after one week of treatment. Depending on your condition, the improvement in the symptoms may be partial or complete after one course of treatment. Subsequent courses may be needed to prevent recurrence of symptoms.
Who is the doctor in charge of the programme?
You will be under the care of Dr Joseph Wang, a Family Physician and Acupuncturist with more than 10 years of experience in osteoarthritis management. Being a qualified medical doctor, he will be able to tailor the osteoarthritis management programme specifically according to your medical condition, if you have any.
