Hiking for Weight Loss

Hiking burns more calories than walking on flat ground, and because it feels like an outing rather than a workout, people tend to stick with it.

Plain English

Patient-Friendly Explanation

Hiking is walking with terrain attached - and the terrain is what makes it work. Uphill sections and uneven ground raise your heart rate and use far more energy than strolling on the flat, so an hour of hiking can burn several hundred calories while still feeling more like a day out than a gym session. That enjoyment matters more than people expect: exercise you look forward to is exercise you keep doing for months, which is what weight loss actually requires. The uneven surface also trains your ankles, hips and core for balance, and the descents work your quadriceps in a way level walking does not. In Singapore you do not need mountains - MacRitchie, Bukit Timah, the Rail Corridor, the Southern Ridges and Pulau Ubin all give you genuine hills and long distances. Start with 30 to 45 minutes on easy ground, build up to an hour or more with hills, carry water, go early to avoid the midday heat, and use sun protection and proper shoes. If you have knee or heart problems, check with us before your first long route.

Medical

Clinical Definition

Hiking is an aerobic weight-bearing activity with an energy cost that scales with gradient, terrain roughness, load and pace, generally in the range of 4 to 6 METs on level ground and 6 to 8 or more METs on steep or rough terrain; a 60 kg adult therefore expends on the order of 250 to 450 kilocalories per hour on moderate terrain and considerably more with elevation gain, which makes hiking one of the more efficient forms of incidental exercise for creating an energy deficit. Regular hiking improves cardiorespiratory fitness, lowers resting blood pressure and improves insulin sensitivity, lipid profile and inflammatory markers, and its resistance components - climbing, descending and stabilising on uneven ground - support lower-limb strength and balance, which is relevant to fall and mobility risk in sarcopenic obesity. Exposure to natural environments is associated with lower cortisol and improved mood and self-reported wellbeing, and outdoor activity of this kind tends to show better long-term adherence than indoor equivalents. Clinical cautions include increased patellofemoral and tibiofemoral load on descents - relevant in existing knee osteoarthritis - ankle inversion injuries, heat illness in tropical climates, and the need for medical clearance and graded progression in patients with known cardiovascular disease, poorly controlled hypertension, significant knee or ankle pathology, or a history of falls; total daily activity should still be built up gradually, and weight loss requires the resulting energy expenditure to be paired with appropriate dietary intake.

Key Insight

Why It Matters

Hiking is one of the easiest ways to burn a serious number of calories without it feeling like punishment - and the hills around MacRitchie, Bukit Timah and the Southern Ridges are steep enough to make a real difference. Tell us your current activity level and we will set a sensible starting route and duration.
