Epworth Sleepiness Scale
The Epworth Sleepiness Scale is a simple questionnaire that measures how likely you are to doze off in everyday situations, helping to screen for sleep disorders like sleep apnoea.
Plain English
Patient-Friendly Explanation
The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) is an eight-question test that rates how likely you are to fall asleep in everyday situations, such as watching television, sitting in a meeting, or waiting in traffic. Scores above 10 suggest excessive daytime sleepiness, a common warning sign of obstructive sleep apnoea — a condition closely linked to excess weight. It takes less than two minutes to complete and is a standard first step in sleep screening.
Medical
Clinical Definition
The Epworth Sleepiness Scale is an eight-item self-administered questionnaire scoring the likelihood of dozing across sedentary situations (0–3 per item; total 0–24). A score above 10 indicates excessive daytime sleepiness and, in the setting of obesity, snoring or witnessed apnoeas, warrants evaluation for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) with polysomnography or home sleep testing. Obesity is the strongest modifiable risk factor for OSA; ESS screening is recommended in weight-management clinics because untreated OSA impairs weight-loss success, worsens cardiometabolic risk and increases perioperative complications.
