Bimagrumab
Bimagrumab is an investigational medication that aims to build muscle while reducing body fat — a new approach to weight loss being studied in clinical trials.
Plain English
Patient-Friendly Explanation
Bimagrumab is a new type of medication, still being studied in clinical trials, that is designed to help people lose fat while keeping or building muscle. Most weight-loss medicines work mainly on appetite; bimagrumab works differently by acting directly on pathways that regulate muscle and fat. Because it is investigational, it is not yet available for general prescription in Singapore.
Medical
Clinical Definition
Bimagrumab is a fully human monoclonal antibody that blocks activin type II receptors (ActRIIA/ActRIIB), inhibiting signalling by myostatin and activins that normally limit muscle mass. In a phase 2 randomised controlled trial published in 2021 (Heymsfield et al.), 48 weeks of treatment in adults with type 2 diabetes and overweight or obesity produced a placebo-subtracted reduction in total fat mass of approximately 20.5% together with an increase in lean mass. It is given by subcutaneous injection and remains investigational; longer-term efficacy and safety data are still being evaluated.
