An investigational oral GLP-1 weight-loss tablet in clinical trials, and how it may expand treatment options.
Danuglipron is an investigational weight-loss medicine taken as a tablet that works like the GLP-1 hormones your gut releases after eating. It helps you feel full sooner and eat less. It is not yet available for prescription while clinical trials continue.
Danuglipron is an oral, small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist in development for obesity and type 2 diabetes. Unlike injectable peptide GLP-1 agonists, it is absorbed orally and directly stimulates GLP-1 receptors, enhancing glucose-dependent insulin secretion and promoting satiety. Phase 2 trials showed dose-dependent weight loss; gastrointestinal tolerability and optimal once-daily dosing remain under investigation.
An effective oral GLP-1 option would broaden non-injectable treatment choices for patients who prefer tablets. Dr Joseph Wang follows these emerging therapies to discuss future options alongside currently approved medications.
