A blood test that measures your average blood sugar over two to three months, a key marker of metabolic health during weight loss.
HbA1c is a simple blood test that shows your average blood sugar level over the past two to three months. Unlike a single finger-prick reading, it gives your doctor a fuller picture of how well your body is managing sugar. For anyone on a weight management journey, it is a key marker of metabolic health.
Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) reflects the percentage of haemoglobin that is irreversibly glycated, providing an integrated measure of average blood glucose over the preceding 8 to 12 weeks. It is the standard diagnostic test for diabetes and prediabetes: a value of 6.5% (48 mmol/mol) or higher indicates diabetes, while 5.7 to 6.4% (39 to 47 mmol/mol) indicates prediabetes.
Even a modest weight loss of 5 to 10% can meaningfully lower HbA1c, making it one of the best markers to track how weight loss is improving your metabolic health. At Accord Medical Clinic, Dr Joseph Wang uses HbA1c to personalise and monitor your weight management plan.
