Body dysmorphia is a mental health condition involving obsessive focus on perceived appearance flaws, which can complicate weight-loss efforts.
Body dysmorphia β formally called body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) β is a mental health condition where a person becomes excessively focused on perceived flaws in their appearance, flaws that others may not even notice. In the context of weight management, it can manifest as an unhealthy preoccupation with body shape or size, leading to extreme dieting, excessive exercise, or avoiding social situations. Professional support can help you develop a healthier relationship with your body.
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is classified in DSM-5-TR under obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. It is characterised by a persistent, intrusive preoccupation with one or more perceived defects in physical appearance that are not observable or appear slight to others. The preoccupation causes clinically significant distress or functional impairment and is not better explained by an eating disorder. BDD has a lifetime prevalence of 1.9β2.4% and commonly co-occurs with major depressive disorder and social anxiety. It is distinct from body dissatisfaction β a subclinical state common during weight loss β in severity and functional impact.
