Dumping Syndrome

Dumping syndrome happens when food moves too quickly from the stomach into the small intestine, most often after weight-loss surgery. It can cause nausea, cramping, diarrhoea, and dizziness shortly after eating, especially after sugary meals. Symptoms usually improve when you eat smaller meals and avoid high-sugar foods.

Dumping syndrome is a constellation of gastrointestinal and vasomotor symptoms triggered by rapid gastric emptying of hyperosmolar chyme into the small intestine. Early dumping occurs within 15-30 minutes of a meal with nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and palpitations, while late dumping at 1-3 hours reflects reactive hypoglycaemia from an exaggerated insulin response. It is most common after gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, and management includes low-glycaemic, low-osmolar meals, separating liquids from solids, and in refractory cases octreotide or revisional surgery.
