Conditions

Depression and Obesity

Depression and obesity have a bidirectional relationship — each increases the risk and severity of the other, requiring integrated treatment.

🤲

Patient-Friendly Explanation

Depression and obesity often go hand in hand — each can make the other worse. Depression can lead to overeating, reduced physical activity, and poor sleep, while the physical and social challenges of obesity can trigger or deepen depression. Treating both together leads to much better outcomes than addressing either issue alone.

🔬

Clinical Definition

The relationship between depression and obesity is bidirectional and mediated through overlapping neurobiological pathways, including HPA axis dysregulation, chronic low-grade inflammation with elevated pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-alpha), and altered monoamine signalling. Weight stigma and body image dissatisfaction contribute additional psychological burden. A 2020 meta-analysis in the BMJ found that individuals with obesity have a 55% increased risk of developing depression, and depressed individuals have a 58% increased risk of developing obesity.
