Artificial sweeteners, also called non-nutritive sweeteners, provide sweetness without the calories of sugar. Common examples include aspartame, sucralose, stevia, and saccharin. While they can help reduce overall calorie intake when used to replace sugar, their effects on weight and appetite are still being studied — some research suggests they may affect gut bacteria and insulin response in ways that could influence weight.
Non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS) are synthetic or natural compounds that provide sweet taste with minimal or no caloric content, typically 200-13,000 times sweeter than sucrose. They activate T1R2/T1R3 sweet taste receptors on the tongue but their metabolic effects are complex: they stimulate cephalic phase insulin release in some individuals via lingual sweet receptors, may alter gut microbiota composition (particularly saccharin and sucralose), and can affect GLP-1 secretion. A 2022 WHO systematic review found short-term NNS use modestly reduces body weight (≈0.71 kg), but long-term epidemiological data show associations with increased BMI and cardiometabolic risk — possibly due to reverse causation or compensatory eating behaviours.
