Conditions

Chronic Kidney Disease and Obesity

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is gradual loss of kidney function, and obesity is a major risk factor — weight loss can help slow its progression.

🤲

Patient-Friendly Explanation

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) occurs when the kidneys gradually lose their ability to filter waste from the blood. Carrying excess weight increases the risk of developing CKD because obesity raises blood pressure and blood sugar levels — two of the biggest causes of kidney damage. Losing weight can slow or even prevent the progression of kidney disease.

🔬

Clinical Definition

Obesity is an independent risk factor for chronic kidney disease through multiple pathways: glomerular hyperfiltration from increased renal blood flow, adipokine-mediated inflammation and fibrosis, and the metabolic consequences of insulin resistance and hypertension. Obesity-related glomerulopathy (ORG) is a recognised pathological entity characterised by glomerulomegaly and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. Even modest weight loss of 5-10% can reduce proteinuria and slow eGFR decline.
